The Mosselbank River Conservation Team (MRCT) is committed to protecting your privacy. This app is primarily used by MRCT staff and team members for environmental monitoring and conservation data collection.
Public visitors can view the Public Hub (conservation statistics and educational content) without creating an account. No personal data is collected from public visitors.
This policy explains how we collect, use, store, and share personal information from registered team members.

This section applies to registered team members only. No personal data is collected from public visitors.
Personal information: Name and email address provided during registration.
Authentication data: Your account credentials are managed securely through Firebase Authentication. We do not store your password directly.
Location data: GPS coordinates captured when you submit environmental monitoring records (river monitoring, water quality, vegetation surveys, clean-up events).
Environmental data: Observations, measurements, incident reports, water quality readings, vegetation survey data, and waste collection records you submit through the app.
Photo data: Photos captured via camera or selected from your gallery when submitting field records. Photos are compressed on your device before upload and stored in Firebase Storage alongside the associated record.
Draft data: Incomplete form submissions saved locally on your device for later completion, including any attached photos.
Device information: Basic device identifiers for authentication and app functionality.
Usage data: Cache timestamps and app interaction data to optimise performance.
Your data is used for the following purposes:
Environmental monitoring and conservation efforts along the Mosselbank River. Generating aggregated reports, dashboards, and statistics for conservation planning. Displaying anonymised conservation impact data on the public hub. Managing team member accounts and access approvals. Communicating with you about your account status. Exporting conservation data for reporting purposes (Excel/CSV exports by authorised administrators), which may include photo download URLs. Improving the app's functionality and user experience.
Your data is stored securely using Google Firebase and Cloud Firestore services hosted by Google. We implement appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect your information, including:
Encrypted data transmission (HTTPS/TLS). Firebase Authentication for secure sign-in. Firestore Security Rules restricting database access based on authentication status and user roles. Firebase Storage Security Rules restricting photo uploads and access to authenticated users only, with file size limits enforced. Role-based access controls (team members and administrators have different permissions). Local draft data stored on-device using SharedPreferences and is not transmitted until you submit a record. Regular security reviews of our systems.
We do not sell your personal information. We may share data in the following circumstances:
Aggregated, anonymised environmental statistics are displayed publicly on the app's Public Hub (e.g. total waste collected, monitoring sessions, events held). No personal information is included. Aggregated conservation data may be shared with conservation partners, government agencies, and investors/donors. Administrators may export detailed records (including the name of the submitting team member) for internal reporting purposes. Personal information may be disclosed if required by law or to protect the rights and safety of MRCT and its users.
We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide the service. Environmental monitoring records are retained indefinitely for conservation research purposes.
Photo originals may be deleted by administrators after a retention period to manage storage costs. When a photo original is removed, a small thumbnail is preserved for reference. Bulk photo deletion may be performed on photos older than a configured retention period.
If you request account deletion, your personal profile data will be removed. Submitted environmental records and associated photo thumbnails may be retained in anonymised form for conservation reporting.
As a registered team member, you have the right to: access the personal data we hold about you; request correction of inaccurate information; request deletion of your account and associated data; withdraw consent for data collection at any time by discontinuing use of the app; lodge a complaint with the relevant data protection authority if you believe your rights have been violated.
